Thomas Covington scores podium position in Grand Prix MX2 in Lombardia

Thomas Covington of the Rockstar Energy Factory Husqvarna Factory Racing team scored a podium finish in sizzling temperatures at the MX2 GP of Lombardia. In the first heat, he had to fight his way forward from a bad start to fourth, and in the second heat, he finished third, after being in the leading group for most of the race. Thomas Kjer Olsen also had two top ten finishes, with tenth and sixth respectively. Conrad Mewse added to his points tally in both heats with 20th and 14th.

The track at Ottobiano was completely changed for this event. It offered a sandy underground which got extremely tough and challenging as the weekend wore on. This, coupled to extreme heat, made for a GP that all riders would mark as one of the toughest ever. On Saturday, Covington immediately demonstrated good form by winning the qualifying heat convincingly. Olsen had a good qualifying race and finished third, and Mewse claimed tenth spot, which put the whole team on a good footing.

The riders started race one in temperatures that had already swung way pas the 30 degree mark. Conrad Mewse lead the team's charge, and held an early top five position. He lost his rhythm somewhat, and battled on to finish 14th.Thomas Kjer Olsen also had a top ten start, but dropped back a few spots after a crash. After a few back and forth battles, he finished tenth. Covington had to fight his way forward from a bad start, and was one of the strongest riders on the track. He kept pushing forward, eventually finishing fourth.

Covington made sure to be part of the leading group at the start of race two. For a few laps, he held second position, but had to yield to a strong Jeremy Seewer eventually. His efforts were rewarded with third in the race. Olsen had a worse start than in race one, but soon worked his way into the top ten again. He eventually settled into sixth spot and held it to the end. Conrad again started in the top ten, and went as high as seventh until the heat zapped his energy. He dropped to 20th, still good for a solitary point. Thomas Covington saw his hard work rewarded with a call up to the podium for third overall. Thomas Kjer Olsen was ninth and Conrad Mewse 18th. Olsen is still third in the world standings, with Covington sixth and Mewse 19th.

The GP circus travels to Agueda in Portugal for the next round this coming weekend.
